RTLS – Real-Time Location Tracking Systems
RTLS also forms the foundation for a new level of flexible automation in production, for example through dynamic, self-organizing manufacturing concepts. A mobile robot, for instance, must constantly be aware not only of its own location but also of the location of the product it is supposed to process, in order to navigate along the optimal route.
The technology can also improve safety when using mobile robots. Think of it as a form of geofencing: “If a vehicle not only knows where it is but also tracks the people around it, the robot’s safety measures can be automatically enhanced when someone approaches.”
For example, in order to correctly determine, control, and document the torque for a specific screw, a continuous comparison between the position of a tool (such as a screwdriver) and the product’s digital 3D model is required. This enables verification and documentation of each individual production step.
